About me

When I was a little kid, I “published” a “newspaper” at Christmas time called the North Pole Gazette, which is to say I wrote a story about the results of that year’s Reindeer Games plus a profile on Santa (who predicted a banner year for toy distribution), drew a few comics then photocopied the pages and passed them out to the kids on my street.

Why do I share this embarrassing tidbit from my past?

To let you know that writing has always been my passion.

I earned my journalism degree in news/editorial from the University of Colorado and worked the majority of my 18-year newspaper career as a sports writer, first at the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo., and then at the Tribune-Review in Pittsburgh. During that time I was a beat writer for NHL and MLB teams as well as major college sports and high schools. Where I thrived, however, was writing about everyday people doing incredible things.

The lawyer who covered 1,000 miles on foot in Alaska in the dead of winter in the Iditarod Trail Invitational.

The wounded veterans who completed a grueling Spartan Race course despite dramatic physical challenges.

The cystic fibrosis patient who wakes up each morning not sure if it’s going to be a good breathing day or a bad one, but still runs marathons faster than most people.

Writing about sports and fitness, particularly these types of real-world, real-person stories, remains my speciality. You can often read my stories at TeamUSA.org profiling Olympic athletes and previewing storylines to follow at major events across the world.

Other regular clients include P3R, otherwise known as the people behind the Pittsburgh Marathon and other major road races in the city,  and the Cleveland Marathon. Blogs for them have included profiles and features on their charity runners for #FundraisingFriday, helping to spotlight the Run For a Reason program, news on course changes and policy changes, promotional materials and spotlights on the neighborhoods through which runners will travel. Often times these posts lead directly to an uptick in registrations. When the Pittsburgh Marathon took over the Pittsburgh Triathlon, I wrote a series of posts helped them to rebrand the race and broaden a dialogue with the local triathlon community.

I’m not all about sports, though. I’m also the lead contributor for Caregiver magazine, a quarterly publication for which I consult on selecting themes and produce a large portion of the original content. Recent themes have been safety, technology, mental health, autism and caring for the caregiver.

Other recent and ongoing work includes real estate features, travel and tourism, college preparation and wedding planning.

Whatever it is you need, I can probably help. Not sure what you need? I can help with that, too. I’d love to brainstorm and come up with ideas to help your website copy reach your customers and clients and make you a part of their daily lives.
